How often should I shock my hot tub? We advise customers to shock dose their water once a week to control bacteria growth and destroy bather impurities.
There are two possible products which you can use to do this; chlorine shock and non-chlorine shock. What is the best chemical for hot tubs? SpaChoice Chlorine Granules. When should you not use a hot tub? Avoid hot tubs if you can during those 9 months. If you do use a hot tub, turn down the temperature and limit your time in the water to less than 10 minutes. Be cautious when using a hot tub if you have heart disease.
When you soak in hot water, your body can't sweat. What diseases can you get from hot tubs? Legionella infection Steamy hot tubs can also pose a risk of Legionnaires' disease, a type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. These bacteria are found naturally in water, and hot tubs that aren't disinfected properly can become contaminated with Legionella, according to the CDC.
Will bleach kill Legionella? Warning: Be aware that water at this temperature may cause scalding. After de- scaling, flush the shower thoroughly and soak in bleach, which helps sterilise and kill any bacteria.
A curious thing about bromine pools, is that shocking reactivates bromide ions to produce — bromine. Adding one or two packets of pool shock regenerates bromine levels, creating essentially free bromine. Chlorine does not share this phenomenon. Yes, bromine tabs can be used in outdoor pools, but the problem with bromine is that it cannot be stabilized or protected from the sun with cyanuric acid. For outdoor pools that receive strong direct sunlight, bromine levels can deplete rapidly, requiring more bromine to maintain healthy levels.
For indoor pools that receive very little sunlight, Bromine is preferred or recommended. The reason for this is that bromamines compounds of bromine and organics that naturally occur , do not gas-off the surface like chloramines. Chloramines mono, di and tri -chloramines tend to rise to the surface and gas-off, with highest concentrations measured close to the water surface, where swimmers are breathing deeply.
Chloramines continue to rise, and even in the air strives to continue working, or oxidizing. They are attracted to metal surfaces ladders, clocks, furniture, duct-work, drop ceilings and steel structural supports. Basically, it can rust out the building, unless the pool chemistry is very carefully managed, and the HVAC systems are built to constantly eject internal air to the outside, while pulling in a constant supply of fresh air.
For pools that use an automatic pool cover, Bromine may be a good choice, since the issue of sunlight degradation is largely removed. Bromine and bromamines are also less damaging to auto cover fabrics, as compared to chlorine — all else being equal. To switch from chlorine to bromine, one simply needs to stop using chlorine tablets and begin using bromine tablets. If you use a tablet feeder or chlorinator, it should be replaced, so that chlorine residue does not come into contact with bromine, which could be dangerous.
Going the other way however, requires draining of the pool water, to remove the build-up of bromide ions in the water, which will continue to convert added chlorine into bromine. Even when bromine levels are zero, there still exists a level of bromide ions, which should be removed prior to beginning a chlorine tablet regimen. After cleaning the filters by using vinegar or other homemade mixtures, you can refill the spa and heat it to your desired temperature.
After having the right level of pH and alkalinity, you can sanitize it with bromine or chlorine. Hot tub owners are also recommended to shock the water once a week to control bacteria growth and destroy the impurities. Mixing bromine and chlorine in hot tub should not be done as the combination of these two chemicals can cause serious health risks.

I go though about 30 lbs of 1"tabs per month. Any thoughts?

As geekgranny said, you don't want chlorine and bromine tabs right next to each other. It is fine using them both on the same pool, but the two kinds of tablets shouldn't be put up against each other.
Once they dissolve everything is fine. Sounds like mixing the tabs is out! Thanks for the warning. Plan B: I guess I will use up the bromine tabs and then buy chlorine 3" tabs. That will cut my cost in half! You must log in or register to reply here. Thread Status. Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
