Scientists quickly injected AZT into patients. The first goal was to see whether it was safe — and, though it did cause side effects including severe intestinal problems, damage to the immune system, nausea, vomiting and headaches it was deemed relatively safe. In order to do so, a controversial trial was launched with nearly people who had been diagnosed with AIDS.
The plan was to randomly assign the participants to take capsules of the agent or a sugar pill for six months. Neither the doctor nor the patient would know whether they were on the drug or not. After 16 weeks, Burroughs Wellcome announced that they were stopping the trial because there was strong evidence that the compound appeared to be working.
One group had only one death. Even in that short period, the other group had But the study remains controversial. For example, some patients received blood transfusions to help their immune systems; introducing new, healthy blood and immune cells could have helped these patients battle the virus better.
There were also stories of patients from the 12 centers where the study was conducted pooling their pills, to better the chances that they would get at least some of the drug rather than just placebos.
And there were still plenty of questions left unanswered about the drug when it was approved. For example, some physicians say that a patient can start taking AZT at any time. Some say the threshold is five hundred CD4 cells T-cells or below. Others say never take AZT.
AZT is also used to reduce the transmission from mother to child during pregnancy and labor. The pro side says it reduces transmission; the con side says it may cause birth defects. Another issue is whether it makes symptoms worse. The medicine can prolong life but it might also kill healthy cells. There are stories of children dying from AZT.
Would you take a kid out of their home because someone is not giving them their meds? These are questions Valerie Emerson brought up in her custody battle. It was considered child abuse. She won her case. Skip to main content. Blog Home About Archive. A brief history of AZT. By Intern Meecha Corbett , September 9, Related Blog Posts. The diarrhea experienced by some people who take antibiotics also might be due to an overgrowth of the bacterium Clostridium difficile , which causes a disease known as pseudomembranous colitis.
Controlled studies have shown that supplementation with harmless yeast—such as Saccharomyces boulardii or Saccharomyces cerevisiae baker's or brewer's yeast —helps prevent recurrence of this infection.
Treatment with antibiotics also commonly leads to an overgrowth of yeast Candida albicans in the vagina candida vaginitis and the intestines sometimes referred to as "dysbiosis". Controlled studies have shown that Lactobacillus acidophilus might prevent candida vaginitis. AZT can inhibit crucial DNA-related riboflavin activity, which may be normalized by riboflavin supplementation.
A year-old woman with AIDS and lactic acidosis received a single dose of 50 mg of riboflavin, after which her laboratory tests returned to normal and her lactic acidosis was completely resolved. More research is needed to confirm the value of riboflavin for preventing and treating this side effect.
Thymopentin is a small protein that comes from a natural hormone in the body known as thymopoietin. This hormone stimulates production of the white blood cells known as T lymphocytes. Thymopentin alone did not seem to have a benefit in this study. Since thymopentin is administered by injections into the skin, people should consult with a doctor as to the availability of this substance. Animal studies suggest that vitamin E may improve the efficacy of AZT. The practical importance of this finding remains unclear.
The zinc also improved weight and CD4 cell levels. The amount of zinc used in this study was very high and should be combined with 1—2 mg of copper to reduce the risk of immune problems from the zinc long term.
Studies have shown that chewing khat significantly reduces the absorption of ampicillin, which might reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotic. Therefore, people taking ampicillin should avoid herbal products that contain khat. Please read the disclaimer about the limitations of the information provided here.
