Was greeted kindly and able to take a seat and chat for a couple of hours. It was the perfect location, perfect crowd, perfect staff. I walked in the door to be welcomed by lovely staff who recommended a wine that was bang on at the end of a hard day.
I chose a quiet corner, put my feet up and relaxed …… for an hour at least. I ordered a cheese board and another wine. The cheese board was incredible…… very simple — lovely chutney, 3 delicious cheeses — plenty of it!! Yes, plenty. And delicious seeded crackers, once again, plenty. Just wonderful. Fantastic staff, very helpful and a chef who is open to customer requests. Saturday is the busiest day at the market so introducing Summer Sundays means visitors and residents have more time and freedom to shop over the whole weekend.
For residents, Sunday markets offer a chance to enjoy a world-famous shopping and leisure destination in a more relaxed local ambiance. Summer Sundays at Portobello and Golborne Market.
I'd always heard that this market was a must-see, but honestly, I don't know why. Maybe I just had a bad first experience, but I was really disappointed. I got there very early on a Saturday morning and followed the herd from Notting Hill Gate tube station. The walk was much longer than I had anticipated, and the entire area was grubby. Much of the market itself was full of pure junk and "made in China" goods.
I had to really dig deep to find the true antique shops. I happened into a huge basement antique mall which was overwhelming. Having been a market vendor myself, I was taken aback by the behavior of most of the vendors here. Unapproachable, ill-informed, etc. I decided they weren't getting any of my money. Was hoping to see more artisans, but only a few were scattered about.
It got so incredibly crowded that I had to head back. The only thing I really enjoyed was all the pastel-colored facades on the street approaching the market, along with the street performers. All I can say is if you don't like crowds, don't go here on the weekend. Hope you have a better first impression than I did! Portobello Market was lots of fun! We went 2 weeks ago on a Saturday morning. The best advice I can give is go as early as you can.
We got there at 9 and things weren't busy yet but by 11 you could hardly walk and it was hard to buy anything. It was alot of fun though and if you take one of those hop on hop off bus tours it is on their stop. Don't wast your time going on an off-market day. There is absolutely no reason to go walk this ugly street on which most of the shops are not even open.
Those that are have nothing of interest. Excursion Monroe, NC 6 contributions. Portobello Road -a must do in London. Now I have been to street markets all over the world, but this one outdoes them all by far. I have never met friendlier or more helpful venders anywhere and the variety of items that they have The clothing styles you can find in this market are amazing.
From conservative to trendy to hip hop to punk to alternative with a little goth mixed in as well. Whatever you're looking for or if you just want to find a friendly atmosphere for "window shopping" this is definitely the place for you. Sandygranny Sandy, UK contributions. When visiting this market, be prepared for a long walk as the market just goes on and on. There is a lovely atmosphere with all the colourful market stalls and there is something for everyone here, from antiques, jewellery, leather handbags, clothes, books, cameras, CDs, paintings and much more.
We popped into one of the cafes for a cuppa and a snack and also had a browse around The Travel Bookshop in Blenheim Crescent, just off Portobello Road. It is definitely worth spending an hour or two here on a Saturday. Vacation London, Uk 1 contribution. The market is good, but it is just way, way, way, to crowded with tourists on a Saturday. Unless you go really early I recommend going on Friday, when there is less booths but dramatically less crowds. Companion Istanbul 1 contribution.
I spent 3 years in London as a student. I have changed so many places and finally found the one I adored so much. Living in Notting Hill area is just fantastic. It is like living in your dreams. These are just a few features of this neighborhood. Fridays and Saturdays on Portobello Market is another fun. Leave yourself to that spell and enjoy the rhytmn of the crowd. Grap a few fruits or a chocolate-banana waffle. Don't skip the French cheese selling guy!
Well, lots to tell, but it never is enough to describe that beauty unless you live yourself. Why don't you get lost in antiques and enjoy the harmony??? Paradise Amersfoort, Holland 1 contribution. Still authentic! Yes, despite the many tourists, the atmosphere is still typical Portobello Road. Yes, it is crowded, and yes, there are many tourists. Yes, it is an excellent place to go when visiting London. I have lived in London and made Portobello Road to a regular Saterday-morning trip, often taking visitors.
Always a success, excellent atmosphere, fine trade. Tip: go half way, and have a lunch at Tom's.
