Great Smoky Mountains National Park was established on June 15, after overcoming numerous economic, cultural, and political issues.

Today the park is the largest protected land area east of the Rocky Mountains and has become the most visited national park in the American Park System.

Rocky Fork is surrounded on three sides by the Cherokee National Forest, allowing hikers to access the Appalachian Trail. The park is a lot more primitive than other state parks in Tennessee but offers 50 miles of marked trails and old logging roads to explore, as well as equally as impressive views of the Southern Appalachians.

The Cherokee National Forest stretches from Chattanooga to the North Carolina border, covering an impressive , acres of wilderness. West of the Cumberland Plateau, the somewhat flat highlands stretch east, and then drop down into the Nashville Basin, forming an area of productive farmland. The Gulf Coastal Plain extends across the southern states into southern Illinois.

In Tennessee, the plain begins as hilly land to the west of the Tennessee River, which slowly levels-out as it approaches the state's western edge. In the southwestern corner near Memphis it becomes a swampy lowland flood plain ending along the steep bluffs fronting the Mississippi River Delta. The major rivers of Tennessee include the Cumberland, Tennessee, and the Mississippi rivers.
